After finally being approved for disability, many people still have a hard time making ends meet. For a disabled person with a family, it can be even harder. Thankfully, the SSA understands this fact, at least to a certain extent. If you are receiving benefits under the SSDI program, you may be entitled to additional money to help provide for your family.
You can receive additional benefits if you have children. Specifically, if those children are under eighteen (18) years of age, or if they are between the ages of eighteen (18) and nineteen (19) and they are still in high school. The specific amount you can receive will vary from person to person. Typically, the maximum family benefit would be between 150% and 180% of the disabled person’s base monthly benefit.
It is important to note that this does not apply to SSI. These additional family benefits only apply to the SSDI program.
